FILM 71. Fundamentals of Cinematography (4)

An in-depth exploration of the camera and the principles of cinematography. Emphasis is placed on developing fundamental control of the processes and materials through lectures, field, and lab experience.

FILM 72. Fundamentals of Directing (4)

An introduction to the practices and techniques of directing. From lectures and field and lab experience, students will learn historical and contemporary methodologies in directing, including with cameras, sound, actors, and in documentary contexts.

FILM 73. Fundamentals of Editing (4)

An introduction to both the creative and practical strategies in motion picture editing. Emphasis is placed on developing fundamental control of the processes of structuring and building time-based works through editing and synchronous sound.

FILM 87. Film Studies First-year Student Seminar (1)

The First-year Student Seminar Program is designed to provide new students with the opportunity to explore an intellectual topic with a faculty member in a small seminar setting. First-year student seminars are offered in all campus departments and undergraduate colleges, and topics vary from quarter to quarter. Enrollment is limited to fifteen to twenty students, with preference given to entering first-year students. Prerequisites: none.

FILM 197. Film Internship Program (2–4)

Students will engage in an internship to build skills related to cinematic arts and film studies. P/NP only.

FILM 198. Directed Group Study (2–4)

Directed group study on a topic or in a field not included in the regular curriculum by special arrangement with a faculty member. P/NP only.

FILM 199. Independent Study (2–4)

Individual research and study on a particular subject related to cinematic arts by special arrangement with and under the direction of a faculty member. P/NP only.
